Celebrations of Holy Baptism at Christ Lutheran

with Pastor Ray Rohlfs officiating

Baptism

Celebrations of Baptism at Christ Lutheran flow from the gift of God in this Sacrament.  We see Baptism as a means through which God welcomes people in grace to new life in Him by faith.

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

                                                        Mt. 28: 18-20.

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit….”

                                                       Titus 3: 4 and 5.

At Christ we schedule Baptisms to take place both in Saturday and Sunday services.  Since Baptism in Lutheran tradition is the Sacrament given to the Church, public baptisms in services are our practice, but baptisms in hospital settings are also celebrated.    Saturday services are held at 5 p.m. with the exception of Easter Saturday, and Sunday services during the school year are at 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 a.m. and from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend at 8:00 and 10:00 a.m.

Godparents witness the Baptism and vow to pray for the baptized one and, in the case of children, help with their Christian upbringing.  They should be people of faith who believe in the work of the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Baptism.

Certificates of the Baptism and for Godparents, specially embroidered baptismal napkin, felt shell with person/child’s name and baptismal candle are gifts from the church on that day.  A special liturgy is printed for baptismal families and friends to assist them in worship.  Parents may bring memorial flowers and note people to be remembered in that liturgy.  Details about the service will be reviewed with the parents and godparents 20 minutes prior to the service in the sanctuary.

Many couples want to give a special offering on the occasion of the Baptism.  These donations are made out to Christ Lutheran Church and support our Sunday school and, if they are mailed or given via our PayPal at the website one week prior to the date of baptism, will be noted that in the weekend’s bulletin.  Nice addition to the baby book!

Most couples involve a youth baptismal acolyte into the service.  This assistant will make sure the family and friends have service folders, assist with the Chrism Oil blessing and the lighting of the Baptismal candle and collect baptismal certificates and other sacramentals for the family.  They also assist with post-service photos and help older siblings to return the baptismal water to the earth.  A small gratuity ($25) for the youth baptismal acolyte is a nice gesture of appreciation. Please direct gifts to the Christ Lutheran Church and acolyte but not to the pastor.

Celebrations of Holy Baptism are blessedly numerous at Christ Lutheran, so parents will want to contact Pastor Ray rrohlfs@christlutheranorland.com or Jamie (Church Secretary) jamie@christlutheranorland.com to schedule a date as soon as possible.
