News Bulletin for Lent 1 Weekend Worship

The Weekend of March 9 and 10, 2019


The First Sunday of Lent is a time to reflect upon Jesus’ temptations, so we back up from our previous Sunday Gospels to just after the baptism of our Lord and before his entrance into public ministry. Luke tells us that He is full of the Holy Spirit and enters into a time of quiet reflection in the wilderness. What sort of Messiah would he be? The devil tempts Him with a personalized, an worldly and a spectacular direction of ministry. This is defining moment. The whole story must have come from the Lord Jesus himself. We listen to our Lord call us into His story of hope and victory.

CHURCH NEWS


CALLING ALL LADIES The Christ Lutheran LWML unit is hosting the NID’s “Lenten Inspiration” on Saturday, March 30. The event begins at 8:15 with Registration and fellowship and concludes at 1:15 following lunch. Registration forms can be found on the narthex table. The deadline for registration is March 14. Everyone is invited. Come and enjoy a day of fellowship and fun with your Lutheran sisters. See Arlene Gronwold if you have any questions.

EASTER PLANTS Easter lilies and a variety of spring flowers will adorn the chancel on Easter Sunday, April 1. The cost of each plant is $12.00. If you would like to purchase a plant to decorate the chancel, a sign up and payment envelopes are available in the narthex (a small table is set up next to the main narthex table). PLEASE SIGN YOUR NAME ON THE LIST WHEN YOU ORDER! Please return payment envelopes via the offering basket or the Church Office front desk. Deadline to order is Sunday, April 14. Donors are welcome to take their plant(s) home after the 11:00 Easter service. Plants left after a week will be discarded.

EASTER EGGSTRAVAGANZA This year’s Easter Eggstravaganza will be held on Saturday, April 13, from 10:30 to 12:00. Volunteer forms available soon.

  • We will be stuffing eggs on Mondays, March 25 and April 1, at 6:30, downstairs in Fellowship Hall. Please come help us out…and bring a bag of candy if you can. We have many eggs to fill!
  • We need thousands of pieces of candy, individually wrapped and small enough to fit into a plastic egg, for the Easter Eggstravaganza. Donations can be placed in the designated box in the narthex or brought to the Church Office.

YOUTH ORCHESTRA Hey kids (5th Grade and older)! Sign up to play in the Easter Family Service Youth Orchestra, Sunday, April 21, at 9:00 a.m. There will be one practice on Saturday, April 20, at 10:00. Please sign up on the bulletin board by the gym.

SPECIAL MUSIC SCHEDULE Anyone interested in singing and/or playing an instrument for our worship services is asked to sign up on the schedule posted on the bulletin board by the gym. For more information, contact Sandy Knopp, 708-349-0431, x227.

LWML MITES Give your pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters (mites) in the mite boxes for mission work through the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. These boxes will be collected during Lent and Holy Week in the large purple/white box in the narthex.

WOMEN’S SCRIPTURE AND PRAYER GROUP continues this Wednesday, March 13, with our study of Judges. For next class: Read Judges 6 and Chapter 4 in the book.

8th GRADE CONFIRMANDS The 8 th grade Elder/Parent/Confirmand meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 13, from 5:30 to 6:20 in the sanctuary. We will discuss very important information about the Rite of Confirmation at that time, so it is critical that the student and at least one parent participate in this meeting. LENTEN WORSHIP SERVICES Lenten communion services begin this Thursday, March 14, at 11:00 (a lunch after) and 7:00, under the theme: “Beatitudes of Promise.” Lenten services will continue on Thursdays, March 21, 28, April 4 and 11. The evening Lent services will take place in Duehr Memorial Chapel. Pastor Dennis FitzPatrick to lead the Lent evening Duehr Chapel services at 7:00 on March 14, 28, and April 11.

VBS LEAD TEAM The VBS Lead Team will have its first meeting on Tuesday, March 19, at 5:30, in the office conference room. Sub City sandwiches will be provided. If you would like to join the 8+ members of this team in a leadership role, you are welcome to attend this meeting. Please call or text Pastor Ray at 708-341-0431 to reserve a spot.

OWLS ANNIVERSARY LUNCHEON The OWLS will be celebrating 28 years of fellowship and service with an Anniversary Luncheon on Sunday, May 5, at Jenny’s Steak House (11041 Menard Avenue, Chicago Ridge). OWLS members and their guests may purchase tickets for $21 per person, due by April 28. Please see Diane Linkowski for tickets.

OWLS EVENT Are you weary of winter? Tired of ice and snow? Don’t worry about planning an expensive trip to the islands….the OWLS are bringing the Royale Polynesian Revue to perform at Christ Lutheran Church! Enjoy Polynesian costumes, music and dance, and a delicious catered lunch. This event will be held on Thursday, May 9, at 11:00 (after the OWLS meeting). Tickets are $22, and everyone is welcome! (Please purchase tickets by Sunday, April 28. Checks may be made out to Christ Lutheran Seniors.)

HOW POLICE RESPOND TO A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) invites you to a presentation by Officer Joseph Carlson (Palos Heights PD) and Sergeant Troy Siewert (Orland Park PD), as they provide perspective on the challenges police officers face when responding to a call that involves a mental health crisis. SUPPORT THE PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY TREASURE CHEST FOUNDATION’S 10th Annual Treasuring Our Kids Annual Fundraiser, “A Mad Hatter Dinner Party”. CONCORDIA-CHICAGO WIND SYMPHONY SPRING TOUR CONCERT On Sunday, March 17, beginning at 4:00, Trinity Lutheran Church (Tinley Park) will host the Spring Concert of the Concordia University Chicago Wind Symphony. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 708-532-9395.
